Well, you probably didn't get far enough to know that along with all the evils in the world locked into Pandora's box, Athena also sealed away hope just make sure that IF the box was opened, not all was lost. Hope was her power. When Kratos opened the box to kill Ares, Athena assumed that he absorbed all of the evil within the box that fueled his rage and power. But in fact, he'd absorbed the hope, whilst the rest of the evils infected the gods of Olympus, changing them.
Pandora made a point to Kratos that hope wasn't something to toss away or refuse to believe in, but rather "what we fight with when all else is lost." Zeus almost kills Kratos towards the end, and those words ring in Kratos' ears. He delves inside his mind and his heart, forgives himself and is thus forgiven (for the deaths of his family, of Pandora, and all the others he hurt). When he does this, hope awakens in him (since he thought he was hopeless in terms of ever finding peace) literally gives him power to defeat Zeus. It's actually something physical in a way. When he finally kills Zeus once and for all, Athena asks for her power back (since she put it in the box in the first place). Kratos refuses to give it to her and instead releases it into the world. It was just supposed to show that even amidst the chaos, hope still floats around, waiting to be harnessed, available to all people. Mankind no longer lived at the whims of the gods. Power was their own to gather and to use. They were liberated. Kratos actually saved mankind by partially destroying it.
Did that make sense lol?
And yeah, they better not. I don't think they will. I think they just wanted to create a cliffhanger so people could make the rest up on their own.
