Fate/Stay Night is an anime that I love, and I thought it might be interesting to make my own version. Mainly in my head... if it was interesting enough, maybe I could make it into an RP later down the road.
The story of fate/stay night revolves around magicians and a war for the holy grail. The story takes place in modern time, except there are secret orders of magicians that the public does not know about. These magicians usually belong to and are trained by an ancient family. There are several different houses and organizations, but some are freelance (for lack of a better word).
Every ten years, there is a battle for the holy grail. The holy grail can grant any wish, and will only appear once the winner has won the tournament. However, this tournament must take place without the public knowing and only seven magicians are able to enter the contest. Yet the power of the individual magician alone is not enough to obtain the holy grail. If a normal human touches it, they disintegrate... o.O;;
Thus, seven servants (heroes or villains) are summoned from the past (and in one case, the future) to fight for these magicians. Being partially spiritual in nature, the servants are able to touch the holy grail without disappearing. The magician and servant team who manage to win both get their wishes granted. Servants participate in the tournament because they also have a wish they want granted.
Each of the seven servants corresponds to a class: Archer, Saber, Rider, Berserker, Assassin, Caster, and Lancer. The heroes can differ between each holy grail war, but there is always a relation between the hero and their class (archer = projectiles, saber = sword, caster = magic, etc). Saber is considered to be the strongest of all classes, though each class has their special attribute which they excel at.
A master (the magician) has to summon their servant to them; the servant they get depends on who they are as a person. More over, the master and servant will have some common quality, trait, or goal (both have loved ones they want to revive, both are archers, both have a similar personality). When they succeed in summoning a servant, the master is given three command seals. Servants do not always obey their masters (servants have their own desires and will), but if a master uses one of their command seals then the servant has no choice but to obey. If all three are used, the master loses their servant and are disqualified from the tournament.
However, if this happens the two are not out yet. The servant can find another master and make a pact with them (thus, it is possible for someone to have two or more servants, though it is unlikely), and the ex-master can also make a pact with any servants who lose their masters as well.
The relationship between master and servant is vital. The master supplies the servant with mana, and this is what can determine the servants power level. The masters mana is also what keeps the servant in the present time. So, if a servant runs out of mana they disappear and return to their own time.
There are a few ways to supply your servant with mana. You can have them attack other humans to suck the mana out of them (this results in the death of that human), and I think you can let them rest up to regain more... I can't really remember all the ways, but there is one more lol. The easiest way to supply your servant with mana is to become one with them and have sex. >.<
Fate/stay was originally a hentai themed game, turned into an anime. But they left out the sex part in the anime, so we can as well haha.
Still, I think it's an intriguing idea. Plus it really IS the easiest way to 'become one' with another person. (I just like making people have sex though...)
Moving on, the way to defeat a team is to make the servant disappear. Servants are extremely difficult to kill, so the magician usually ends up being the target. If the magician dies, the servant will disappear. It is usually the more evil oriented characters who use this method, though some good/neutral oriented magicians view it as a necessity.
Ooo, forgot something! Because servants are usually well known or legendary people from the past, their weaknesses and strengths are usually obvious. As such, each servant is addressed by their class name instead of their real name (The master of the servant Archer would call them Archer). This protects their identity and prevents other people from discovering their weaknesses.
However, each servant has one or more Noble Phantasms. These are special abilities, weapons, mounts, etc. involved in the legends and histories of the servants (King Arthur = Excalibur, Medusa = Stone eyes, etc.). Sometimes the Phantasms are a bit of a stretch though haha. Anyway, these Phantasms will give away the identity of the servant if they are used without defeating their opponent, so they only use them when they absolutely need to.
Also, I mentioned earlier that the magicians level of mana determines the power of the servant. For example, if a very weak or unskilled magician manages to summon the strongest class, Saber, (as is the case in the anime) then Saber's power will be extremely weakened/limited due to the magician's inability to supply him/her with mana. The same is true for the opposite.
Lastly, magicians participating in the tournament are usually fairly skilled, so they are often able to hold their own to some extent. Obviously, servants are still much more powerful than the magicians. However, they can still provide their servants with support of some kind.
So that's pretty much it for the explanation. I was thinking it would be fun to make my own cycle in these holy grail wars, and I thought it was a fun enough idea to brainstorm with you all.
The servants used from the anime were as follows, so I don't want to use these:
Archer: The main character's future self (though it's never explained in the anime)
Saber: King 'Arturia' Arthur (It's a girl in the anime, so they did some history bending lol)
Rider: Medusa (she's rider because her noble phantasm is Pegasus. In greek mythology, Medusa is the one who tamed Pegasus.)
Caster: Medea
Berserker: Heracles (Hercules)
Assassin: Sasaki Kojiro (He's actually a fake, and you never see the real assassin servant in the anime, but it's too difficult to explain lol)
Lancer: Cúchulainn (the champion of Ireland)
I have some plot ideas, but I figured it would be best to go ahead and choose the servants for this round before doing anything else. If you have any people that you think deserve consideration then PLEASE tell me. You can find most of these people on a wikipedia page.
Archer:
Artemis
Robin Hood
Billy the Kid
Atalanta
Saber:
Joan of Arc
Hua Mulan
Fu Hao
Rider:
Napoleon
Bellerophan (I'm hesitant since he would also have pegasus)
Chiron (A centaur)
Lancer:
Eve (From the bible)
Athena
Tomoe Gozen
Caster:
Morgan Le Fey
Merlin
Berserker:
Achilles
Penthesilea (one of the amazon queens)
Assassin:
Dracula
Camilla
That's all I've come up with for potential options. I feel like there are too many people from greek mythology... I mean, there was Medea, Medusa, and Heracles in the anime... so I guess it's fine, but...
Also, I feel like Morgan Le Fey and Merlin are bad choices since they are also from King Arthur's legends... but I guess that shouldn't matter...
And I really like the idea of Eve... I thought of a good back story for her, but I don't see how I could make it work... maybe a different class? I was trying to think of something to base her class on off the biblical story... Lancer just doesn't fit lol... Besides, I think I like Tomoe Gozen the most for the Lancer class...
Also, Chiron is indeed a centaur, so it would make sense for him to be rider. But I think he was supposed to be gentle, intelligent, and kind... I don't think he was a fighter at all... in fact, he was a healer!!! But I know he trained a bunch of heroes... so maybe I can just bend things a bit. Healing could be one of his noble phantasms also.
I'm leaning towards Artemis for archer, Joan of Arc or Hua Mulan for Saber, Chiron for rider, Tomoe Gozen for lancer, Morgan Le Fey for caster, Achilles for Berserker, and Dracula for Assassin.
Morgan Le Fey and Dracula would be good examples of villains from the the past, so their masters would also be evil or misguided in some form. The others are all pretty heroic... and I realize now that I have a lot of women...
Anyway, PREASE HERP MEEEEEE!!!
Suggest other heroes/villains and/or tell me your preferences, thoughts, ideas for the ones I've gathered.
