SUMMARY
It's set in the 1960s, in an alternate reality. Andrew Ryan--entrepeneur and all around hater--decides to build a city entirely underneath the ocean to escape the pressures of government and religion. He calls it Rapture. In this self-sustaining, aquatic metropolis, he offers to the people complete freedom to seek what they desire; he allows scientific research without moral restraints, he allows artistry without censorship, etc etc. Because of the no-limitations structure of Rapture, many new and exciting things are discovered, the most important being ADAM. ADAM is a substance from a sea slug that regenerates cells, much like stem cells. This allows people to genetically mutate themselves with EVE, or a substance that infects their body--much like cancer--and allows them to look better and perform better. But because of ADAM, the cell deterioration is counteracted.
But of course, EVE is misused, and because of the constant demand for ADAM, people become dependent on it, like a drug. And like any other drug, it consumes their lives, warping their minds. The people of Rapture eventually go insane, and because of that, the amazing city declines, leaving only the few mutated to roam there, scavenging for ADAM. However, ADAM can only be found in one place: inside the Little Sisters. Little Sisters are little girls who collect ADAM from dead bodies and store it within themselves. Thus, they are hunted. They are, though, protected by Big Daddies--or, specially programmed diving suits that can do some real damage. You, too, must hunt these girls in order to keep up your strength, and it is your choice to either Harvest--which kills them, but gives you substantially more ADAM--or save these girls--which gives you a lot less ADAM.
In the game, you play as Jack, a man who--by a stroke of misfortune--crashes in a plane next to Rapture's gate. In order to survive, you descend to the city; but upon getting there, you see what it has become. You are guided by Atlas--a former resident of Rapture--via radio, who gives you advice on how to survive. You must harness ADAM and EVE yourself, subjecting yourself to the same advantages and the same risks as the crazed and violent people of Rapture, as well as wield various weapons. Some of your abilities include the channeling of lightning, fire, and ice from your very fingertips, as well as telekinesis. You start out with a simple wrench, but you will also come across weapons like a pistol, machine gun, and crossbow. But with these great weapons at your disposal, you also go up against some of the most demented characters who will stop at nothing to kill you, by whatever means necessary. Your goal is to locate the sickest of them all--Andrew Ryan--and escape Rapture alive.
